NEWPORT NEWS, Va., (July 1, 2013) –ATAC (Airborne Tactical Advantage Company) recently partnered with the Jordan Paganelli Sarcoma Foundation to sponsor the 3rd Annual "JRock-n-Run" cancer fundraising event in Southern Maryland. The event was held on Saturday, 29 June 2013 in honor of Jordan Paganelli—the son of ATAC pilot John Paganelli—who lost a 23-month battle with a rare, aggressive form of cancer called Aveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma. Jordan died peacefully at home in his parents' arms on the 9th of November 2009—just 5 days prior to his 18th birthday.
Jordan was a remarkable young man; and his courageous struggle served as a beacon of hope and inspiration for thousands around the world as they watched him proudly fight with honor and dignity. He underwent 58 continuous weeks of brutal, in-patient Chemotherapy treatments along with 12 weeks of daily Radiation at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C. Jordan's initial progress was very promising; however, after 23 months of aggressive treatments, the cancer grew more resistive and his condition deteriorated rapidly. On October 30th, 2009, Jordan's relapse was confirmed and he was given just 2 weeks to live. Jordan returned home from the hospital to spend his final days surrounded by the love and support of his family and friends. He died just 10 days later. Jordan's funeral was held on his 18th birthday, November 14th, 2009, and he was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery.
Jordan's parents, John and Laurie Paganelli, chose to keep his memory alive by hosting a special event to raise awareness and funding for childhood cancer research. After Jordan's death, their desire was to create an annual event that captured the essence of their son's three passions: Running, Music, and Personal Relationships in a way that brought together the entire community. The name of the event actually evolved from a clever play on words based on the nickname that Jordan's friends gave him during his cancer treatment. Jordan became known as "JRock" because of his incomprehensible courage, strength, and resiliency during the most brutal conditions imaginable. Thus, the event's name became the "JRock-n-Run"—combining his nickname, his love for rock music, and his passion for cross-country running. The result has become a high-energy annual event that combines a challenging 5k Trail Run & 1.5k Fun Walk along with the "Jordan-Palooza" Music Festival that features numerous local bands, good food, and fun activities for the entire family. The focus of the event is on Personal Challenge and Personal Achievement. Indeed, when people register for the race, they are encouraged to set a "Run-Time Goal" for themselves—something THEY will challenge themselves to achieve. Then, during the post-race awards ceremony, individuals who reach (or beat) their run-time goals are recognized and given a special souvenir to commemorate THEIR victory. In short: the "JRock-n-Run" is a running event, a community festival, and a live concert all rolled into one.
The event is entirely run by volunteers from within the community and every penny raised goes directly to childhood cancer research and the immediate needs of those children currently in treatment. To date, the "JRock-n-Run" has been attended by thousands of people and has raised over 50,000 dollars for research grants while also providing real-time financial assistance to current cancer children in need.
ATAC is extremely proud and humbled to be partnered with the Jordan Paganelli Sarcoma Foundation. Their core values of integrity, dedication, and community service are completely in-line with ATAC's global business philosophy. ATAC applauds these types of non-profit organizations for the tremendous service they provide our communities at large. We look forward to supporting this annual event and feel privileged to be a part of the ongoing effort to find hope and relief for the thousands of children that fall victim to cancer each year.
